Hearing Aid and Audiology Centre

The following sensory impairment check is performed.
1. Pure Tone Audiometry : The character and degree of hearing loss is the standard examination. It is done in our hospital in a soundproof room.
2. Impedance Audiometry : The test can be used to assess the function of the middle ear.
3. Oto-Acoustic Emission (OAE) Test : It is useful for the screening test to detect the usual hearing especially in babies & young children. This test can recognize any hearing problems, and further tests are advised to assess the extent of the hearing loss in these patients.

4. Speech audiometry : In order to assess the understandability of words and phrases, they evaluate speech recognition and expression discrimination.
5. Aided audiometry : To see whether or not our ear helps patients have changed.

How important is the use of hearing aid in patients to hearing loss quickly??
Hearing aid is nothing more than an amplifier that may enhance the sound to the inner ear. Nevertheless, the understandability of speech will be impaired by hearing aid if the internal auditory route from the inner ear to the brain stops working. For early hearing amplification, it is therefore very necessary. The satisfaction with the use & degree of amplification obtained since hearing aid will depend on the severity of the auditory impairment. Practice and good sense are needed. The programming of auditory aids in different environments is common. Patients can sometimes enjoy lip-reading and the usage of hearing aid.

Swallowing

What is swallowing?
Swallowing is a process of moving in mouth food or drink in pharynx or throat or eventually into the esophagus to digestive tract.

How do we swallow?
A cartilaginous membrane known as epiglottis closes above trachea's entrance (windpipe) to stop swallowed bolus from passing through behind the trachea. Swallow consisted of steps Normal Modified Barium Swallow.

• 1. Pre-Oral Preparatory Phase : This contains food processing, salivation, use of utensils and mouth & sensory perception of food that enters the mouth.
• 2. Oral preparatory phase : Food is chewed/chewed into smaller parts & tasted at this stage. In preparation for the remaining phases of the swallow, the food is shaped (chewed when solid) to form a cohesive group.
• 3. Oral Transition/Transport phase : As boluses move over anterior facial pillars/touches on the back of pharynx & pharyngeal swallow is disabled, oral ends, pharyngeal stage starts sensory receptors in oropharynx/language.
• 4. Pharyngeal Phase of Swallow : A variety of physiological events are triggered by pharynges (sensory receptors activating pharyngeal swallow), almost simultaneously. Velum is elevated which prevents food from reaching the nasopharynx. The tongue is pulled back and food is stopped from coming back into the mouth. The epiglottis descends over the larynx, covers the airways and transmits the bolus on each arm. The esophagus starts with the passage of the bolus in the entire Upper Esophagus (UES).
• 5. Esophageal phase of swallow this step is accidental, with some gravity support the bolus moves down the sky through peristaltic wave movement. Bolus comes into your belly, the swallowing process is over & digestion creates.
